For the 3rd year in a row, the Wildcats scored more than 50 points in the annual Sunflower Showdown.

The first half was actually a good ballgame with KU playing hard and using some good ol’ fake punts and fake field goals to get down the field. However, Coach Snyder cannot be outcoached and the Cats are better athletes.

The third quarter was an absolute shellacking, with multiple turnovers and a whole lot of points put up on the board. At one point, it took 3.9 plays per drive for KSU to score. It was almost too easy.

It was a wonderful day to be in Manhattan – and it was good to finally have the game hosted there as the last two were in Lawrence.

Iowa State went on the road and beat TCU; this is the next team we play – in Ames, Iowa. Here’s hoping for a good solid performance by the guys in purple on October 13.

It was a well-fought game throughout the whole game. It came down to 3 turnovers for Oklahoma and the Wildcats winning time of possession.

John Hubert had a great day rushing the ball. Collin Klein had solid numbers. Ryan Doerr pinned OU inside the 20 and all five of his punts. There were no big special teams scores this time, but everyone played well.

Defense rocked. Aside from the quality play of Arthur Brown, other guys stepped up to make quality tackles when they needed to be made. The defensive line put pressure on QB Jones for the whole game (which we never did last year). The turnovers were key: a Ty Zimmerman interception off of QB Jones, a fumble by QB Jones that resulted in a touchdown, and another fumble by QB Bell”dozer” at the goal line. Those were all big plays that kept momentum going our way.

I, unfortunately, did not get to watch the game as it transpired. I was working in the ER and kept busy enough the whole time that my colleagues were keeping track of the score for me. However, when I got home at 11pm, Linda and I watched the whole game. It’s always nice to fall asleep with a smile on your face.

The score may not to show it, but the Wildcats just barely eked out the victory the other day. Despite a dominating victory over Miami the week before, Kansas State came out looking very stale this past Saturday. In fact, they had -1 yards total offense in the first quarter.

It was a very concerning first half. However, the Wildcats came around and found a way to beat North Texas. Credit to Bill Snyder for finding a way to coach the team to a win.

The scary thing is the fact that we go to Norman, Oklahoma this next weekend to play the #5 ranked Sooners. Bob Stoops, their head coach, has never lost to a ranked opponent at home. In fact, he’s only lost 3 games there in his many years as their head coach. Seems Snyder taught him well. But, can the teacher beat the pupil?

Here’s hoping to a great game on Saturday.

On a day where I was prepared to drive home disappointed by a loss, the Wildcats proved to everyone that they are not a fluke. With a very balanced attack of both passing and running, they easily scored and pretty much kept the Hurricanes from scoring.

It was an early day, leaving home at 7:30am for the game. In fact, for the first time ever, our seats were in the shade because the sun had yet to come up enough to shine down on our east-side seats – and it was even chilly. By half, we were in the sun and it was plenty warm.

What a wonderful day of football. There is a lot to be hopeful for – including the possibility of winning games that everyone had pretty much assumed we would lose. Here’s hoping…

Celebrating a birthday with a K-State win

This past Saturday was my birthday – and it was the day of the KSU-KU Sunflower Showdown in Lawrence.  I wrote about the results of the game a few days ago and mentioned that we watched the game with friends on the DVR.  I noted that we had wonderful chinese takeout, but I didn’t mention that we also had Butterfinger Ice Cream Cake. Additionally, we toasted with some birthday cake-flavored vodka – which was quite delicious and potentially dangerous.

The game was absolutely fun to watch, especially since we knew the outcome before sitting down in front of the TV.  However, I think the best part of the evening was just hanging out with some very good friends.  Linda and I are very lucky to have them.

Pictured in purple glory are Linda, Jennifer, Trey, Kaela, and the birthday boy:

Another Sunflower Beatdown

So, K-State went in to Lawrence for the second year in a row and handily beat KU with a score of 59-21.  Once again, the Cats won with tough, fundamental football and some special teams plays that were worthy of highlights on ESPN (including another Tyler Lockett kickoff return for a touchdown).  Defense played well and really only gave up 2 touchdowns throughout the game as the final KU touchdown came with 1 second left in the game against the 2nd string.  In fact, the 2nd string offense came in during the 4th quarter and also scored on the Hawks.

I had to work during the game, but was able to keep an eye on the score during the day.  I DVR’d the game and was able to watch it with friends after work with some take-out from Bo Lings.

PS – Happy 14th Birthday to Anna.  You have become quite the young woman.  We are so proud of you. (More on Anna’s birthday to come in a future post).

K-State Wildcats and the Polls

The Wildcats won this past Saturday against the Texas Tech Red Raiders and, once again, it was a slugfest with the toughest team winning out in the end.  This week, K-State’s special teams really contributed in this game with 2 blocked field goals (both by Guidry) and a 100-yd kickoff return for a touchdown (Lockett).

The Cats rose in the polls to #12 and will be traveling to Lawrence this weekend for the Sunflower Showdown against the Jayhawks.  KU has not won a conference game this year and it seems unlikely that they will at all.  Therefore, we have a really great chance to return undefeated to Manhattan the following week against #3 Oklahoma Sooners.  It has been announced that the game will be at 2:30 and televised nationally on ESPN.  What a turnaround for a team that barely won its first game against Eastern Kentucky!

Here’s hoping for a big victory on Saturday – a birthday gift, indeed.

Cheering for a K-State Win

The Kansas State Wildcats travel to Lubbock, TX today to play against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.  The Cats are ranked #17 in the polls and could become bowl eligible with a win today.

My last post about the football team was several weeks ago when we amazingly pulled out a win at Miami University.  Since then, we’ve survived Baylor and then also beat Missouri, both at home.  With the Baylor win, we cracked into the top 25 with a #20 ranking.  The Missouri win rose us up to #17.

With a win today and an anticipated win next week against KU, we could find ourselves with a perfect record back home on October 29th against an unbeaten Oklahoma.  This game could have huge implications for the conference and for bowl selection.

Well, not to get to far ahead of myself – let’s just root for a victory today at Texas Tech.

KSU Wildcats win in Miami

After expecting to lose – and lose big – the Wildcats swaggered away from a huge fight at the University of Miami.  The Florida heat and humidity didn’t keep the guys down.  Excellent defense and methodical offensive drives resulted in a score of 28-24 in favor of the Wildcats.

During the last few minutes, the Hurricanes marched down the field and found themselves one the 2-yard line with 1st and goal to go.  The Wildcat defense was remarkable with four stops.  41 seconds remained and Colin Klein was able to run out the time with quarterback keeps.  What an exciting game.

Now back home with Baylor coming next week.  What once was a nearly lost season has now turned around with some confidence.  At the end of game one (against Eastern Kentucky), it was thought we’d be 1-2 at this point; instead, we are 3-0.  Let’s go, Cats.

Enjoyed the K-State Run

You may remember my post in late January when I was down about how the Wildcats had dropped out of the polls and had tumbled all the way to tenth in the Big XII.  Shortly after that, the team found itself down a couple players (Freddy Asprilla and Wally Judge) and a second loss to Colorado stung all the more.  Changes were made and the boys won 6 games – including wins against Kansas, Texas, and Missouri.

Watching Pullen, Kelly, McGruder, Samuels, Spradling, Henriquez-Roberts, Peterson, and the other guys through the month of February was a blast.  It brought back memories of last year during the NCAA tournament and how tough the players were.  It was yet another “us vs. the world” scenario that has become so familiar to Kansas State fans.

Impressively, the Cats clawed their way back into the polls at #19 and was the #4 team in the Big XII.  Although far from the preseason #3 national ranking and favored #1 in the Big XII, it was a lot better than where we were just a month ago.

Unfortunately, our run came to an end – against Colorado.  After a first round bye, the Cats entered the game favored to win, but were trampled by the Buffaloes.  They sure had our number this year – sweep of all 3 games.  Oh well, at least we’re likely to go to the NCAA tournament (something unlikely just 4 weeks ago).
