Wordless Wednesday – Organ
Emily & Keyboard Camp
Emily attended the 2012 Kansas State University Keyboard Camp – along with 7 other teen participants. The weeklong camp was run by the keyboard division of the Department of Music – including a professor that taught Linda while we were there, Dr. Virginia Hauser. Dr. David Pickering was the organ instructor; Dr. Hauser was her piano instructor.
Emily stayed in the dorms with a friend during the camp. The days were busy with lessons, practicing, field trips, and adventures in dorm dining.
Emily appeared to have an absolute blast. Included in the video below are an organ piece (her first week playing the organ) and a piano piece that she started after arrival to the camp.
Anna is off doing another summer activity that will be discussed in an upcoming post.

Dance recital 2012
Tonight was the 2012 dance recital for Anna and Emily. This year has been a big one for them as they took their tap, ballet, and pointe ballet to a higher level.
Most importantly, the girls had a change in dance teacher halfway through the year because their original teacher, Miss Nina, required open-heart surgery. Luckily, Miss Nina’s daughter, Miss Vicki, was able to step in and continue the classes.
Miss Nina is doing well and recovering, but has only been able to supervise from a chair. All of the kids and adults in “Miss Nina’s Dancing Darlings” did a fabulous job tonight. Below is Miss Nina with her son and also her daughter, Miss Vicki.
There were also a couple cute dances performed by the little kids – this is how little Anna and Emily were when they started about 10 years ago.

Piano Recital
The big musical weekend was capped with Linda’s studio piano recital. Anna and Emily played and did a wonderful job. Emily played Kabalevsky’s Five Variations on a Russian Folk Song Op 50, No 1 (mistakenly attributed to Latour in the video). Anna played Streabbog’s A Sad Story Op 63, No 12.
You can see more pictures of each of the students playing by looking at the top of the page under the top menu and mouse over “Piano Studio”. Click on the “Piano Recital April 2010” menu option.
Emily & solo flute at district music festival
Emily played Bizet’s Menuet yesterday at the district music festival – receiving a “1″ rating (the best available).
Great job, Emily.
PS – Linda was the accompanist for both Anna and Emily for their solos.
Birthday party for Emily
Emily had her birthday party last night. No, it’s not quite her birthday yet – but it’s difficult arranging parties around spring break, concerts, and the birthdays of her best friends (which just happen to be the same day and an adjoining day).
There were 10 girls total – all 7th and 8th graders – that infiltrated the house after 6:30. A pile of cheese pizzas were attacked, Capri Suns consumed, and then were on to the presents. The cupcakes pictured above were decorated by Emily (with chocolate numbers made by Linda). The girls loved them.
The highlight of the evening was an unlimited pass at PowerPlay (think grown up Chuck E Cheese). Video games, laser tag, go-karts, rope course, and lots more video games were enjoyed by the girls (and me and Linda) from 10pm until midnight.
The girls all returned to the house for a sleepover – every square inch of floor space in basement was occupied. I headed off to bed after arriving home as I needed to get up and work in the morning. Linda, however, attempted to stay up to monitor the partygoers. The plan was for them to all be asleep by 1:00am. Unfortunately, this is the Facebook post I noted from Linda when I got up at 6:00am:
In the interest of self preservation, I have decided that 7th graders that won’t go to bed when told to repeatedly are dumb and not worth my time. I’m going to bed.
After several naps today, I think the girls are back to themselves. However, I’m sure an early bedtime and further naps tomorrow will likely be necessary.
The best thing – they all had a lot of fun! We love you, Emily.
