Wordless Wednesday: Biking and the Girls
Wordless Wednesday – BAK
Tour de Brew
This past week found Linda and I celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary. We celebrated by participating in the Tour de Brew bicycle ride. This is a ride that helped raise money for Bike Walk KC, an organization that promotes and lobbies for healthy living in the Kansas City area. The tour travels along a route connecting historic Kansas City breweries; most of the buildings are now gone and some are still there, but in the form of loft apartments.
We met with neighborhood friends and did the 30-mile ride. We averaged about 12mph and finished in just over 2.5 hours. We had a great time and enjoyed the food and beverages after the ride.
Another month gone by already? New bike, though!
Work has been incredibly hectic for the past few weeks; in fact, it’s been quite hectic with lots of problems. What free time there has been has been occupied with getting miles in the saddle – that’s right – sitting on the bike and pedaling for hours.
I purchased a new road bike in early March and have already put several hundred miles on it. Linda and I have been riding 20-30 miles on each ride. We have just over a month before we ride all the way across the great state of Kansas. Gotta keep riding until we are comfortable with 60-80 miles in a day (should be there soon).
I’m going to work harder over the next few weeks to have more regular content added to the blog. I know that the girls have been doing activities – I’ve just not been able to make a lot of them.
By the way – may your Holy Weekend be blessed.
Back in the Saddle
After finishing the Insanity program back in October, I’ve taken a break from the rigorous daily exercise that I’d begun in February. I considered obtaining another program from the makers of P90X and Insanity; I’d even considered restarting P90X again. However, I’ve been enjoying riding bikes with Linda and have promised to join her on the longer biking events.
So, I’m back in the saddle – cranking out miles on the indoor trainer. We both enjoy riding outdoors much, much more. However, 23-degrees is just a bit too cold to enjoy the ride outside. Plus, no matter how far I ride, I’m already home when I finish!
Linda enjoys watching TV while riding on the trainer. I enjoy listening to my biking podcasts and catching up on my magazines. Great way to get some exercise and complete other enjoyable tasks.
Hittin’ the dirt trails
70 degree weather and dry trails in November can only mean one thing – the mountain bike must be ridden. More importantly, I had just retrieved the bike from the shop several days ago after having a much-needed tune-up and replacement of the rear cassette and chain.
I took the bike to the closest trail, the Shawnee Mission Park mountain bike trails. This is a 6.5-mile collection of trails that range from easy to moderately hard. These are also the trails that introduced me to the love of dirt trails. I think back several years ago to when I had no endurance or cardio conditioning. The few steep grades would make me winded and I’d have to stop frequently. Yesterday found me cruising along with greater ease.
The weather was perfect – I just wished I had friends along with me to enjoy it.
Mission Farms Bike Ride
Linda and I had a wonderful date-night last night. We joined a good friend on our first joint group bike ride.
Mission Farms is a retail-restaurant district in north Leawood. We met up with about 10 other riders and headed south in the mid-evening July heat. This was a “welcome ride” which means nobody gets dropped behind. However, the people at the front pretty much keep going. If you moved fast enough, you can catch them at a stoplight.
After falling back initially to stay with our friend (who had volunteered to bring up the rear), we decided to catch up with everyone else. Staying with the lead group was a little tougher given the heat, but we survived. 17.5 miles later and we were back at the Mission Farms area. After reloading the bikes onto the Jeep, we headed over to one of the restaurants, Los Cabos, and enjoyed cheap beer and lots of chips and dip.
This will be a weekly ride…and I think we’ll be trying to catch it any Tuesday that we’re free.
Tour de France
July has arrived and so has the Tour de France. Linda watches each stage with an almost religious fervor.
She knows a lot about most of the major riders – especially Lance Armstrong. Ask her anything…go ahead…
It’s also been so nice here that Linda and I have been riding our bikes together. 24- and 30-mile rides have been a great way to spend time together. We’re planning on doing a few organized rides together as well. Who knows – maybe by Fall we’ll do our first century ride!
As of today, Lance isn’t doing so well in the Tour. However, there’s still a couple weeks left and anything can happen. Here’s to you, Lance…
